The Sisalwood Story

Sisalwood is a high-end decorative panel composed of a natural fiber composite that is adhered to an environmentally certified plywood panel. The composite is made from rapidly renewable plant fibers such as banana bark, sisal, water hyacinth, coconut, and grasses, and a polymer that emits no formaldehyde or VOC’s. Our products are used in interior design and furniture applications as a replacement for tropical hardwood panels. Sisalwood emulates the natural variability and warmth of hardwood without the detrimental impact on people and the environment.

The story of a material, including its environmental footprint and social impact, affects the look and feel the material brings to a space. While helping to preserve tropical forests by providing an alternative to tropical hardwood panels, Sisalwood simultaneously provides quality employment to people in India, Kenya, and Indonesia. The final product is an aesthetically compelling decorative panel, which may be used toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

Sustainability - The natural fiber used in Sisalwood comes from a variety of sustainable sources including invasive species, agricultural residues, and rapidly renewable plants such as grasses. We offer various sustainable substrate panels that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

No Off-gassing
- Our composite products are made from polymers containing no organic solvents or added formaldehyde. As such, Sisalwood does not off-gass unnatural levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) or formaldehyde into the indoor environment. Most of the core materials that we offer as a substrate for Sisalwood composites also contain no added formaldehyde (NAF) or VOC’s.

Local Sourcing - We strive to source the majority of our products locally. While our fiber is sourced and hand assembled around the world, the plywood and MDF cores used in Sisalwood are sourced locally in the Pacific Northwest. This core material represents the majority of the final product by weight and thus reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

Social Mission - Sisalwood is committed to ensuring that the people who assemble our materials are fairly compensated and empowered. We work only with partners in Kenya, Indonesia, and India that share our social ethic. As we grow as a company, we are committed to ensuring that our partners grow with us.
